The WALKABOUT 1 Running head: VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND SPATIAL ABILITIES The WALKABOUT: Using virtual environments to assess spatial abilities
نویسنده
چکیده
Computer-simulated virtual environments offer promise for assessing peoples’ spatial abilities in large environments. This paper introduces the WALKABOUT, a task that simulates navigation through a large space by using dynamic 3-D computer graphics. Preliminary results indicate that performance on the WALKABOUT is moderately predictive of the ability to point to unseen familiar locations in a large-scale (campus) environment. In particular, latencies from a measure of the ability to change from a ground-level to a bird’s eye perspective are significantly correlated with pointing to unseen campus locations.

متن کاملSpatial navigation in large-scale virtual environments: Gender differences in survey tasks
Most of the studies on gender differences in spatial abilities have focused on traditional paper and pencil cognitive tests, while these differences have been less investigated in navigational tasks carried out in complex virtual environments (VEs). The aim of the present study has been to evaluate gender differences in route and survey knowledge by means of specific tasks (route-learning, poin...
متن کاملValidity evaluation of a spatial memory task in virtual environments
A broad range of neuropsychological tests and trainings are used to assess cognitive function during rehabilitation after brain injury. However, given the everyday problems that patients struggle with, questions of ecological validity arise. For example, abstract tasks have little meaning to patients and decrease motivation to practice skills frequently. This study proposes a spatial memory tas...
متن کاملSpatial abilities at different scales: Individual differences in aptitude-test performance and spatial-layout learning
Most psychometric tests of spatial ability are paper-and-pencil tasks at the bfiguralQ scale of space, in that they involve inspecting, imagining or mentally transforming small shapes or manipulable objects. Environmental spatial tasks, such as wayfinding or learning the layout of a building or city, are carried out in larger spaces that surround the body and involve integration of the sequence...
متن کاملVirtual Reality and Special Needs
The use of virtual environments for special needs is as diverse as the field of Special Education itself and the individuals it serves. Individuals with special needs often face challenges with attention, language, spatial abilities, memory, higher reasoning and knowledge acquisition. Research in the use of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) targets both cognition and behavior (Rizzo, et.al, 2...
